SG SUFFERING FROM DIPLOMATIC ISSUES AS OUR LEADERS LACK DIPLOMATIC SKILLS

I have confided to some people about the great challenge we will face in the near future due to tension at Taiwan Strait as well as South China Sea. Especially South China Sea issue is extremely delicate and important to us as a trading port. I was very concerned that PAP under PM Lee would just screw it up badly. A small country like Singapore depends on great Diplomacy and Trade for survival. If our political leaders lack diplomatic skills, we will suffer very badly.

Just two years after the passing of LKY, it is unfortunate that my very deep down fear and concern came true. PM Lee, for all his life living enclosed in a palace fed with a golden spoon, does not seem to know how to handle human relationship, lest Diplomacy. Unlike his father who was basically a political street fighter, PM Lee lacks that realistic exposure to understand the importance of the nuance in diplomacy.

POULTRY FROM US STATES BANNED FOR AVIAN FLU, AVA CAN HELP CULL?

Reports in the news indicate that the AVA has suspended the imports of poultry, poultry products, processed eggs and live birds from parts of the US states of Tennessee and Wisconsin, after reports that premises there had been affected by avian flu.

Wah, in the first place, didn't even know we import poultry from as far away as Tennessee and Wisconsin. Thought we got most of our chickens from Malaysia. Anyways, AVA has experience in this area. If our American friends need help with culling of the chicken, then AVA can do it. They are good and efficient in that.

The editorial warns of the dangers of "creating a class of religions and cultures to be trusted and therefore to be preferred over those that cannot."

CHINA OR US? CHOOSE WRONGLY, SG SUFFERS

It seems the question about whether countries would choose China or the US have been at the forefront of world issues lately, simply because of China's sudden show of power in the South China Sea, and the US change of President and thus the change in their stance on world issues.

Singapore is not immune to all these talks. Singapore has long maintained that it does not want to choose between powers. However, the most recent developments in Malaysia and the Philippines has clearly shown that sides have been chosen by Singapore's neighbours. And the Terrex issue also shows that Singapore is not sheltered anymore from great friendships with either super powers.

Our government have to tread carefully on such issue, and make sure they earn their millions by keeping Singapore onside with both Super Powers.

CHEE SOON JUAN: GETTING IN BED WITH USA MAY NOT BE A SMART MOVE WITH A RISING CHINA

I wrote the article (below) in Aug last year after the PM was feted in a state dinner at the WH. It is an occasion that international leaders covet, but also one that doesn't come for free. The event was Obama's not-so-subtle way of telling China that Singapore remains firmly in the US' geopolitical orbit.

But as I say in the piece, the US has no friends, only interests. And with changes in the presidency, policies and tactics also change. With Trump as president, is America still as committed to Asia? Will he rely on diplomacy or resort to force over the SCS dispute?
