SUTD LOSES MIT BRANDING, WHY ARE TOP UNIVERSITIES PULLING OUT OF S’PORE?

We refer to the article “SUTD ends its education partnership with MIT but will continue collaborating on research” (Straits Times, Jun 23). It states that: “The ending of the education agreement will, in practice, mean that SUTD will lose some of the MIT branding. The tagline that accompanies the university name, “established in collaboration with MIT”, will go and opportunities for student exchange at MIT will lessen.

FEWER FOREIGN STUDENTS TURNING TO SG FOR STUDIES, PRIVATE EDUCATION IN DECLINE

In 2012, there were 100,000 locals and 35,000 foreign students studying in private schools in Singapore. By 2015, the number has fallen to 77,000 locals and 29,000 foreigners. In 2016, Singapore saw the closure of 25 private schools due to fewer foreign students coming in to fill enrollment numbers. The Committee For Private Education (CPE) says a total of 42 schools were de-registered in 2015 and 2016 alone.

COMPARING SINGAPORE’S 6 LOCAL UNIVERSITIES

NUS annual tuition fees are between $7,850 to $24,200. NTU's fees are between $7,850 to $31,500. SMU students pay $11,100 to $12,300 a year. SUTD demands $11,650 per year, SIT's fees range from $10,1000 to $15,300 and UniSIM charges $31,000 to $33,000 for the entire degree programme.
