TRS BAN REFLECTS MDA’S LIGHT TOUCH FOR INTERNET CONTENT

“At the end of the day, nobody is truly anonymous on the Internet. If they break severe enough laws, wherever they are they can be hunted down and international arrest warrants issued,” said Mr Cheng, a member of the Media Literacy Council. Socio-political websites that operate within Singapore’s laws and social norms have nothing to fear, he added.

THE GOVT SHOULD WORK WITH THE INTERNET, NOT FEAR OR BAN IT

I really wonder how Stomp can still be around when TRS has to get shut down. Seriously why is the government so scared of the media we consume? Especially when that media isn't being controlled by them. TRS may fall but many other sites will take its place. The government should learn to work with the Internet instead of fearing it and fighting it.

DOUBLE STANDARDS: WHY SHUT DOWN TRS AND NOT GOVT-OWNED STOMP?

The MDA has ordered The Real Singapore to cease operations with effect of 8 PM tonight. They cited that TRS was responsible for "fabricating stories to create disharmony in Singapore" and "inciting xenophobia". In other news, Stomp Straits Times, which is equally notorious for fabricating stories and inciting xenophobia will be operating as usual. If the government were truly serious about protecting our social fabric, they would shut down STOMP as well, but they clearly have no intentions on doing so.

ROY NGERNG: TIME FOR SINGAPOREANS TO FIGHT BACK & FIGHT FOR TRS

We want to wait for someone else to give us the news. We do not want to step up and fight. We want to wait for someone else to fight for us. We know Singapore is going down the drain, with the way the PAP is running the country, but we choose to be too scared to do anything. Why? Why are we still waiting for someone else to do something for us? Why? The PAP dares to shut The Real Singapore down because it knows it can. It knows that you won't stand up and fight back. And now, are we still sitting down while the PAP laughs at us and laugh themselves to the bank?

TRS SHUT DOWN PROVES SINGAPORE IS NO DIFFERENT FROM NORTH KOREA

What a futile attempt endeavor this shutdown is! You’re just showing your fear of information! If TRS contains untrue and inflammatory statements, then expose the truth by posting replies and comments – that’s what your IBs are for (instead these dumb IBs just indulge in vicious attacks on netizens). There is no need to shut TRS down.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SINGAPORE IF TRS EDITORS ARE CONVICTED OF SEDITION?

Do we want to set a precedent where anybody complaining about this type of encounter or making generalizations can be arrested, charged, found guilty and potentially jailed for sedition? If the couple are convicted of sedition on all these charges, all our local forums can just shut down already. I see this type of complaint daily online.

WHY IS AMOS YEE BEING FORCED TO SHUT UP ON THE INTERNET?

It is evident that both Amos’ and TRS’s cases have one thing in common, which is the allegedly offensive posts were ”posted” ONLINE. However, Amos was told to ‘shut up’ and not make any more comments or posts online, while the TRS couple have no such restrictions. To me, that is the puzzling part and I hope it is not sub-judice to try to understand the rationale for the restrictions imposed. While I understand that the courts have vast powers to impose any restrictions legally, but an umbrella ban?

SEDITION CHARGES AGAINST TRS ARE BASELESS AND MUST BE DROPPED

The Government has charged the two people supposedly behind The Real Singapore (TRS) with 7 counts of sedition. It claims that they published seditious articles which promoted ill will and hostility between different races of people in Singapore. But these charges are entirely without foundation and they should be dropped. Even if people have legitimate concerns to raise, they now have to consider whether they can get prosecuted for having the potential to cause ill will or hostility. This is even if they have no intention of doing so, and even if their comments are made in good faith. This is a step backwards for freedom of speech in Singapore.
