NO NEED FOR M+S TO PAY DEVELOPMENT CHARGE ON THREE PARCELS OF FORMER RAILWAY LAND, SAYS ARBITRAL TRIBUNAL

An international Arbitral Tribunal has decided that the Malaysia-Singapore joint venture company, M+S, need not pay a development charge on three parcels of former railway land, bringing to a close a dispute between the two countries over the tax. The Foreign Affairs ministries of Singapore and Malaysia announced the news of the award – delivered by the tribunal on Thursday – in a joint statement on Friday.

75 YR OLD ELDERLY WOMAN JAILED FOR NOT PAYING $411 S&C CHARGES

She owed the Tanjong Pagar Town Council $411 in conservancy fees – and was issued a summons to appear in court. According to My Paper, Mdm Lee – who is 75-years old – received the summons two weeks ago. However, Mdm Lee said that she seldom opens her letterbox, and had had to ask a friend to read the letter to her as she can’t read English. The newspaper said Mdm Lee, who lives in Lengkok Bahru, surrendered herself to the police this month and was detained for two days after she declined to post bail which was offered to her.

Former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew attended the Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru 49th National Day Celebration dinner on Wednesday (Aug 13). About 900 grassroots leaders, clan association representatives and residents were reported to have cheered loudly when he arrived. Mr Lee also conitnued to emphasize the need for higher GDP. He said, “Without progress, without higher GDP every year, we will not be able to do this. It is because we have the necessary resources that we can proceed with all these obligations to our people.”

TREKKING ALONG THE CHOO-CHOO CORRIDOR

All in all, it was an interesting walk and a new perspective from the railway tracks. Those who are planning on making this walk, please wear robust hiking shoes! The tortuous pounding of trekking on the hard gravel has taken a toll on many poor hikers' shoes. BG Tan made an amusing comment about the number of "lost soles" that he saw along the track. And for those of you who have yet to experience this corridor of nature and history, be quick, before the railway tracks are removed.

Dr Chia Shi-Lu’s ‘silver coin’

Is there a need to make this coin in the first place? I understand the GRC has five members, why does the coin only have Dr Chia Shi-Lu’s name on it? Why do guests have the impression that it’s silver or is it really silver? Whose money was used to make these coins? Was there three quotations called for the making of the coin? Besides this coin, are there any companies and a school involved in the organising of this dinner? Was the procurement process according to government procurement guidelines?
