AUSTRALIA GOING TO USE EXTREME FORCE AGAINST ISLAMIC TERRORISTS

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday said "extreme force" was justified in battling Islamic State militants as he played down reports that an Australian plane delivering humanitarian aid in Iraq came under fire. Australia will "in coming days" join ally the United States in an international effort to transport weapons to Kurdish forces fighting IS extremists in northern Iraq. It has also been conducting humanitarian air drops to the besieged town of Amerli.

ELDERLY HAD TO DELAY MEDICAL TREATMENT BECAUSE IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE

Many elderly people who went to their neighbourhood polyclinics were aware that they could use the Pioneer Generation (PG) cards for the first time and took them along. Some had even postponed treatment last week to take advantage of the subsidies. "My daughter wanted to bring me here on Friday as I was feverish, but I wanted to wait till today to get the discount," said retiree Ang W.F., 82.
