Residents clean estate as cleaners take a rest

Dr Lee Bee Wah, an MP for Nee Soon GRC, said bus stops, playgrounds and carparks, which are often littered with used water bottles, among other things, tend to be some of the dirtier areas in the estate. She said she hoped the event will encourage residents to cultivate good habits. "There has been more awareness among residents that they have to do their part for a litter-free environment," she said.

FAMILY FUN AT ISTANA ON LABOUR DAY

Members of the public could also enjoy the sight of Falabella miniature horses from the Singapore Zoo, take a guided tour of the Istana building or go on a nature walk to spot kingfishers, hornbills, trees and plants on the Istana grounds, while children could have their faces painted. The Istana holds its open houses on selected dates each year to mark Chinese New Year, Labour Day, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, National Day and Deepavali. Entry to the 40ha Istana grounds is free for Singaporeans and permanent residents, while others pay $1.

Mr Goh said the event was attended by about 500 to 600 people in total. This was a significantly lower figure than the crowd at a similar protest he organised exactly a year ago, which he had said drew between 5,000 and 6,000. USED-CAR DEALERS SOUR OVER LEMON LAW

In the latest reported case, Speedo Motoring was ordered to pay businessman Ong Gek Sing $4,500 for a battery. The battery had failed two months after the company sold a second-hand Lexus GS 450 Hybrid Super Lux to Mr Ong for $138,000 in 2012. The sale came with a $1,800 discount as Mr Ong had said no to an extended warranty. The tribunal ruled, however, that although Mr Ong could claim for the defective battery, he could not do so for the tyres and brakes, which had suffered "wear and tear". Speedo Motoring appealed to the High Court, but lost its case.
