TERRORIST WANTS TO SET UP ISLAMIC STATE IN CHINA

A mastermind of violence in China's Xinjiang region in which almost 100 people were killed sought to establish an Islamic state, official media said yesterday, reinforcing government warnings about an Islamist threat. A court in the far western region sentenced 12 people to death on Monday for an attack in Xinjiang's southern Yarkant county on July 28, in which the government said 59 terrorists were gunned down by security forces, while 37 civilians were killed.

The trial before District Judge Victor Yeo, which started on Tuesday, will decide if AHPETC had flouted the law in holding the event without a permit. The town council claims it was a "community event" or a "mini-fair". It disputes NEA's assertions that it was a "trade fair" or a "temporary fair" and hence, required a permit under Section 35 of the Environmental Public Health Act. This law states that a permit is required for "any temporary fair, stage show or other such function or activity".
