US wants Snowden dead, not alive
Edward Snowden needs better security after a news report quoted unnamed United States intelligence officials saying they wanted the former spy agency contractor dead and are discussing ways to kill him, his Russian lawyer said yesterday (Jan 21). Snowden was granted asylum in Russia last summer after fleeing the US, where he is wanted on espionage charges for leaking information about government surveillance practices.

The United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) has collected almost 200 million text messages a day from across the globe, using them to extract data including location, contact networks and credit card details, according to top-secret documents yesterday (Jan 16). The untargeted collection and storage of SMS messages — including their contacts — is revealed in a joint investigation between the Guardian and the UK’s Channel 4 News based on material provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
