A 49-year-old man pleaded guilty on Monday (May 11) to charges relating to a slapping incident of teenage blogger Amos Yee Pang Sang. Neo Gim Huah admitted to voluntarily causing hurt to teen blogger Amos Yee at the walkway between the Family Justice Courts and the State Courts on Apr 30 at about 2.40pm.

Law Minister K Shanmugam said the rule of law is fundamental for any civilised society, and both the man arrested for slapping Amos Yee, as well as Amos Yee himself are entitled to their defence in court. Speaking at the sidelines of a community event yesterday, Mr Shanmugam said questions have also been raised as to why someone as young as Amos Yee was charged.

I am writing this blog in a state of shock and horror after seeing the video of Amos Yee being physically assaulted and then taunted outside the Court. Our Police force has failed to protect Amos and seem to have ignored or not taken seriously the numerous online threats of violence and sexual violence against him, a child. As a result someone has taken the law into their own hands.

In case you didn’t know, Amos breached his bail conditions by posting online again complaining about his bail conditions and describing how his father had hit him, especially when he wanted to go to court in his pyjamas. His well-meaning bailor who put up $20,000, a stranger to him, pulled out because Amos wouldn’t abide by bail conditions. Then another stranger turned up in court yesterday to slap him in front of the media.
