When I read news like how anti-foreign protesters are burning down factories in Vietnam, I question whether Singaporeans are really xenophobic. Despite our grouses against an increasingly foreign population crowding out our infrastructure and job market, we do not burn factories or murder foreigners or push aliens onto subway tracks.

Please love us Mr Prime Minister, we are your children

Many Singaporeans are displeased by your current pro-foreigner stance and likely will feel threatened that you are siding with the 2 million foreigners residing here than your own people. Its akin to having a father who suddenly opens up his home to other strangers living together and treat them the same as his own children. Singapore must be for Singaporeans only and many of us don’t want to share our country with others as its our birth right. We welcome foreigners to work in our midst but disagreed that many of them are able to convert to be citizens so easily.

Singapore Govt gives tuition grants of $210 million a year to foreign students

MOE said that the Govt gives tuition grants of $210 million a year to foreign students. It said that most of the foreign students who received grant have been “contributing to our economy”. Most of the grant recipients have been working and are contributing to our economy, while some did not start work immediately as they had deferred their bonds to pursue further studies. Actions will be taken against those who default on their obligations.

It is about overcrowding, not xenophobia

I refer to this week’s VoicesTODAY topic, “Is xenophobia a growing problem?” Any claim of xenophobia among Singaporeans must be substantiated, for it drives a wedge in our relatively cohesive society. Singapore residents, including foreigners who have lived here for several years, are merely unhappy about overcrowding. Having too many people on a small piece of land, with public infrastructure that is overtaxed, causes discomfort and stress due to intensifying competition for limited resources such as housing and cars. The unhappiness is not directed at foreigners.
