A Singapore Airlines (SIA) passenger was charged about S$1,520 for using the Internet during his flight from London to Singapore on Thursday (Nov 12). Mr Jeremy Gutsche, CEO of online magazine Trendhunter.com, posted his bill on Twitter the next day, complaining about being “gouged” by the airline. He had subscribed for the 30mb Internet OnAir package at US$28.99 (S$37.63), but was charged an additional US$1142.47 (S$1,483.06) for overuse.

Lui Tuck Yew said: "It goes to show that 20/20 hindsight is most prescient in those who operate from the sidelines," Lui said, when an independent lawmaker suggested SIA had ignored "tell-tale signs" about the danger facing civilian aircraft in the region.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is looking into ways to enhance the sharing of safety and security information among national aviation authorities and airlines, following the downing of Malaysia Airlines MH17 over eastern Ukraine, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on Monday (Aug 4). But like many airlines plying between Europe and Asia, Singapore Airlines was flying in the same airspace as MH17, with SQ351 about 90km away, said Mr Lui. “As soon as SIA received news of the incident, they immediately re-routed all their flights to avoid Ukrainian airspace entirely,” he said.

Meanwhile, SIA’s claim that it is not using Ukraine airspace has been challenged by reports stating that Flight SQ351 was about 25km away from the ill-fated MH17 when it went down. Posting on SIA’s Facebook page, netizens were berating SIA on this issue, accusing SIA of not being truthful:

Singapore's government says it plans to install anti-missile defenses on passenger jets flown by national carrier Singapore Airlines and a subsidiary. Authorities are developing a defensive device that they hope to have ready for use by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir planes in two years, Ministry of Defense spokesman Alex Tan said Sunday. The government has not yet determined how it will spread the cost between the government and the airline, Tan said. He did not provide a cost estimate.

THE pilots of this Singapore Airlines plane have been left a little red-faced after it struck an aerobridge at Sydney Airport this morning. It is believed the A380 had just landed and was pulling into the gates when one of its engines impacted the aerobridge.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed that one of its planes veered off the runway yesterday (May 21) while landing at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar. An SIA spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia that flight SQ998, an Airbus A330 that took off from Singapore and which was scheduled to land in Yangon at 9.20am on Wednesday, encountered heavy rain and veered “slightly off” the runway on landing.

Isn’t it amazing that SIA girls giving up blue eye shadow is deemed to be so important it actually made it as international news? But read past it and you’d note that SIA is probably in dire need of some publicity as of late to increase flight bookings. So what better way to give our national carrier a boost than to pubicise how cute some of their stewardesses look.

Singapore Airlines have always been our pride, having won several awards and known to be one of the world’s best airlines. While some may complain about the drop of quality in food and service over the years, especially in the economy class, the taste is still a mile above (pun not intended) some of the other airlines.
