SIA PASSENGER CHARGED $1,520 FOR USING INTERNET ON THE PLANE

A Singapore Airlines (SIA) passenger was charged about S$1,520 for using the Internet during his flight from London to Singapore on Thursday (Nov 12). Mr Jeremy Gutsche, CEO of online magazine Trendhunter.com, posted his bill on Twitter the next day, complaining about being “gouged” by the airline. He had subscribed for the 30mb Internet OnAir package at US$28.99 (S$37.63), but was charged an additional US$1142.47 (S$1,483.06) for overuse.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is looking into ways to enhance the sharing of safety and security information among national aviation authorities and airlines, following the downing of Malaysia Airlines MH17 over eastern Ukraine, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on Monday (Aug 4). But like many airlines plying between Europe and Asia, Singapore Airlines was flying in the same airspace as MH17, with SQ351 about 90km away, said Mr Lui. “As soon as SIA received news of the incident, they immediately re-routed all their flights to avoid Ukrainian airspace entirely,” he said.

Singapore's government says it plans to install anti-missile defenses on passenger jets flown by national carrier Singapore Airlines and a subsidiary. Authorities are developing a defensive device that they hope to have ready for use by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir planes in two years, Ministry of Defense spokesman Alex Tan said Sunday. The government has not yet determined how it will spread the cost between the government and the airline, Tan said. He did not provide a cost estimate.

SIA flight veers off Myanmar airport runway

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed that one of its planes veered off the runway yesterday (May 21) while landing at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar. An SIA spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia that flight SQ998, an Airbus A330 that took off from Singapore and which was scheduled to land in Yangon at 9.20am on Wednesday, encountered heavy rain and veered “slightly off” the runway on landing.
