[COMPLAIN] DBS STAFF DO NOT DESERVE THE $1000 FOR SG50

Dear Editor, I read with shock that DBS Bank is going to give out $1000 to all local and foreign DBS employees at the level of vice-president and below, to celebrate SG50. The bank estimates that this will work out to be $10 million. I am disturbed why DBS, a Singapore born and bred bank is being so generous to its employees, many of whom are not even Singaporeans. Many will already know DBS was actually set up with government's money, i.e. The people's money.

S’PORE ACTOR LIM KAY TONG TO PLAY AS LEE KUAN YEW IN 1965 MOVIE

It’s official. Local veteran thespian Lim Kay Tong will be playing Singapore’s founding father and first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in the upcoming SG50 film 1965. After an extensive two-year search and speaking to almost 20 people, including local actor-turned-Hollywood mainstay Chin Han, the much speculated role has finally been filled. The 60-year-old Lim, who has starred in local stage and television shows as well as BBC productions and Hollywood films such as Shanghai Surprise, had been always been tipped as a front-runner for the role.

THE POLITICAL FORCES SHAPING OUR FUTURE

Liberalism demands an informed and interested citizenry that accepts and is better for its differences. This is a tall order, but is a worthy goal and a mark of a mature and humane society. However, we cannot be naive and ignore the realities of our economic condition. Populism is the real threat among the three forces. It throws up weak leaders with no normative vision. We need confident leadership that can accept feedback from the ground, offer a vision to the people and develop a plan to realise our collective aspirations.

SG50 Special #47: Singapore’s Combat Veteran Daljit Singh

After an incident where Indonesian commandos killed and mutilated the bodies of 9 men from 2SIR in Kota Tinggi, Daljit Singh and other troops were sent from Singapore into Malaysia to flush out these Indonesia commandos. It took Daljit Singh and other brave men three months to hunt down these saboteurs and in total, they killed or captured a total of around 60 Indonesian commandos. Daljit Singh alone was credited for single-handedly killing 6 or 7 enemy combatants during this operation in Kota Tinggi.

Apart from his heroics, ASP Koh is fondly respected for his leadership philosophy and leading by example. During an interview, Koh said: "I believe a policeman’s life is very precious. If anyone has to die it should be me. A commander’s responsibility is to ensure that every person is accounted for and no unnecessary risk is taken". Honestly, how many of us can put the lives of others ahead of our own? With such brave and dedicated Commanders like ASP Koh within the Singapore Police Force in the past, it is little wonder why crime was swiftly brought under control during Singapore's turbulent years.
