SCHOOL BULLYING CAN ONLY BE STOPPED WITH VIOLENCE?

When I was being bullied in secondary school, the bullying started with badmouthing and sometimes slaps to the back of my head. Now, at that point, with the slapping for example, I could have retaliated with a few slaps of my own. No biggie, right? Someone throws a slap, you return with a harder one and that's that.

When 9 year-old Muhammad Azief Rashdyn was singled out by his female classmate for bullying her, he did not expect to receive a tight slap across his face from her angry father in front of his whole class. After the slap, the boy wet his pants and had a visible mark on his left cheek. The teacher quickly intervened, preventing the man from coming into further contact with Azief. GIRL FORCED BY CLASS BULLY TO LICK TOILET BOWL WHEN SHE WAS IN PRIMARY ONE

I was in primary 1. This Indian girl sat beside me. After awhile, she became more aggressive and hit me, and it got worse, till the point where she would lock me in the toilet everyday. YOUR PSLE DOES NOT DEFINE YOU AS A PERSON

Don’t let your PSLE score define you, because it doesn’t. It should not even be taken as a measure of your intelligence. Or proxy for what you can achieve in life. Even Mensa scores are not a measure of all-round intelligence and potential to achieve excellence in life (what that is exactly is another topic for another day).

SG TEACHERS ARE AT THE MERCY OF MISBEHAVING STUDENTS & THEIR PROTECTIVE PARENTS

When I was growing up, any pupil who was punished by his teacher, discipline master or principal would likely be given another round of punishment by his parents when they learned of his misdeeds. Times have changed. Back to the present: if a pupil defies his teacher, what should the teacher do — turn a blind eye, plead with him to obey — especially now that pupils are aware that the teacher may be charged for and found guilty of using criminal force?

MOE TEACHER JAILED & CANED FOR MOLESTING 8 YR OLD GIRL STUDENT

During a weekend tuition class, a teacher asked one of the pupils to go to the back of the room to do some reading. He followed the eight-year-old girl, made her stand next to him and touched her private parts through her clothes, while the other pupils continued with their work, oblivious to what had happened. On Tuesday, the former primary school teacher, 27, was sentenced to a year in jail and three strokes of the cane, after pleading guilty to molesting the child on Oct 19 last year.

Time for corporal punishment in schools?

MS CATHERINE Ng's letter ("Timely reminder for 'monster parents' "; last Saturday) reminds me of similar stories I frequently hear from friends whose spouses or children are school teachers. It underscores the great stress teachers face from the exacting demands of not only their schools and the Education Ministry, but also unreasonable and disrespectful parents. Some teachers are chided and blamed when they notify parents of their children's habitual tardiness, refusal to submit homework, misbehaviour and so on.
