ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE @ S-LEAGUE MATCH, S'PORE FOOTBALL IS HOPELESS?

SOMETIMES, if not most times, the media don't cover crucial S-League matches. I wish I had the real answer why they're not interested. Monday night's THE NEW PAPER League Cup match between arch-rivals Home United and Hougang United, which ended 1-1, was a very acrimonious affair. Disgraceful, to say the least! Poor sportsmanship and lowest levels of gamesmanship were shown and this video clip clearly shows in the final stages of the match, where all hell broke loose, with little respect for the match-officials.

AFTER TERRIBLE START, HOME UNITED FINALLY SHOW GLIMPSES OF CHAMPIONSHIP FORM

They were one of the title contenders pre-season, but endured a terrible start when they went winless in their first four games and dropped 10 points in the process, effectively killing their title hopes before they could even start to dream. But once they got into the groove, once they kickstarted their campaign with their first win, a 4-1 cakewalk over Garena Young Lions despite conceding the opener, they are now one of the form teams outside of the seemingly unstoppable league leaders Albirex Niigata.

STAR PERFORMING PLAYERS IN THE S-LEAGUE SO FAR

It has been an intriguing S.League season so far, full of thrills, spills and lots of surprises in the first out of three rounds of competition. Nouveau riche Tampines Rovers did not have it all their way while strugglers Hougang United have sprung to number two. After Round One, we have compiled for you a list of the best performers so far, and interestingly, none of the local players featured here were selected in the last national team call-up.

S-LEAGUE: ALBIREX KNOCKS HOUGANG OFF THE TOP

It was a homecoming of sorts as Albirex Niigata returned to a new synthetic turf at the Jurong East Stadium for their first home game of the season. And boy, did the White Swans prove that they are the real deal both off and on the pitch with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over pretenders Hougang United who fell off the S.League summit into second place. Into their 13th season, Albirex have now established themselves as a model of professionalism and it is easy to see why. It is hopefully also not that difficult for the local S.League teams to follow suit.
