INDONESIA EXPECTS DRIER THAN USUAL WEATHER, FOREST FIRES OUT OF CONTROL IN RIAU

Indonesia's weather agency BKMG declared that it expects drier than normal weather in fire-prone regions in western and central Indonesia for the months of March and April. This region is highly susceptible to haze during the dry season due to forest fires caused by slash and burn techniques used to clear land for palm oil plantations. Just last week, Riau's Governor declared a State of Emergency in Riau to combat the burning forest fires which are getting out of control.

The Riau Islands office of Bank Indonesia will investigate a criminal case involving Kang Tie Tie, a money changer from Batam who was stabbed and robbed in Singapore on Friday. The Criminal Investigation Department in Singapore is expected to provide the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore with information on the criminal case on Monday. -The Jakarta Post/ANN The Riau Islands office of Bank Indonesia (BI) will investigate a criminal case involving Kang Tie Tie, a money changer from Batam who was stabbed and robbed in Singapore on Friday. Among questions to be investigated include the fact that the businessman was able to take Rp 5 billion (S$527,908) out of the province without being detected by authorities.

HAZE EXPECTED TO HIT SINGAPORE AFTER JUMP IN RIAU FIRE HOTSPOTS

ndonesia's disaster agency warned Wednesday that haze could return to neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia after a huge jump in forest fires in a province at the centre of a smog crisis last year. Fires in Riau province, on western Sumatra island, caused the worst outbreak of haze in Southeast Asia for more than a decade in June last year, affecting daily life for millions and sparking a heated diplomatic row.
