INSULTING A PUBLIC OFFICER LANDS MAN IN TROUBLE, FINED FOR HIS VERBAL ABUSE

Nowadays, a lot of people always think they are in the right in anything, and would not think twice about scolding or insulting someone else. These people often think they can get away with it.

This was the case with Chan Kong Thoe, 56, who never thought of the consequences of his action. When pressed for details by a public officer on how he had used up $147,538 in retirement funds within five months, Chan, who was a ComCare applicant, passed a snide remark that humiliated a public officer ans insulted her modesty. He also showed further disrespect when calling the officer a "low class officer".

For using insulting words towards a public service officer, Chan was charged and found guilty. He now have to cough up a $3,000 fine.

A 35 year-old Finnish tourist, naked and looking drunk, was spotted in the lobby of Fragrance Hotel in Selegie Road in March this year. When two police officers arrived, they found him lying in a back alley nearby in just his underwear. They managed to get the man, Antti Tapio Peltomaki, to put on a raincoat, but he removed it after a while and became agitated when they asked him some questions. As the two policemen were trying to calm him down, Peltomaki suddenly slapped one of them, a 21-year-old national serviceman.

KHAW BOON WAN: S'POREANS SHOULD SHOW RESPECT TO CIVIL SERVANTS

The Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan on Tuesday (Nov 18) called on Singaporeans to continue to respect public officers. In a blogpost, Mr Khaw noted that frontline officers "have a challenging job" and "do their best to attend to the needs of Singaporeans". He called for them to be accorded the "respect and dignity they deserve", saying that some officers have been put in difficult situations, or even subjected to verbal and physical abuse.
