SINGAPORE PETROL PRICES CRASH TO 6 YEAR LOWS

Petrol prices have crashed back to 2009 prices where crude oil was sold at less than US$50 per barrel. Since last Thursday, SPC & Caltex implemented price reductions and soon Shell and Esso followed to match the competition. Prices were adjusted downwards by 4 cents per litre while diesel price was cut by 3 cents per litre.

HDB: THANKS TO MINISTER KHAW, NEW BTO FLATS ARE MORE AFFORDABLE NOW

NEW Housing Board flats have become more affordable relative to applicants' household incomes, compared with last year's figures. But while the gap is closing, they have yet to reach the target that National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan set last year of having new flats priced at about four times the applicants' median income. When he set that target last year, the price ratio was about 5.5 times annual salary. Now, it is lower for all flat sizes.

The restaurant owners defended their pricing yesterday (21 Aug). They say that the prices are a result of the area’s high rents, which have almost doubled in the last five years. At Harvest Seafood Restaurant, live sea bass is sold for $7 per 100g. At Fuqing Marina Bay Seafood Restaurant and Haven Lobster & Seafood Restaurant, it costs $9 per 100g, while two outlets run by Forum Seafood Village charge $9.80 per 100g.

CITY GAS TO LOWER HOME GAS PRICES FOR 3 MONTHS

The gas tariff for households using City Gas will decrease by 0.1 per cent from next month until the end of October. City Gas, which supplies town gas to almost 90 per cent of residents living in new Housing Development Board estates and private properties, said that the gas tariff for households will decrease from 21.08 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 21.06 cents per kWh.
