Singapore football is really high level. Have you seen what we use as substitution boards for players to go on and off the pitch? Everyone else use electronic boards. We use whiteboards. Going primitive?

SportsHub has decided that the pitch at the National Stadium will be fully grass. A new grass pitch will be grown at a nursery and when it is matured it will be transported to the stadium and laid on top of the current hybrid pitch. All this will be done in time for the SEA Games in June next year, SportsHub said in a statement on today (Dec 20). It added that the current hybrid pitch is now playable, as seen in the recent Suzuki Cup. But while the grass is able to grow quickly, it takes a long time to anchor and sink roots. As such the pitch is not robust enough for multi-purpose and intensive usage.

Sport Singapore (SportSG), the governing body for Singapore sports, maintains that it will not pay for the Singapore Sports Hub until the National Stadium pitch is of a standard befitting the magnitude of the sports events being held at the new arena. In a statement released by chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin on Tuesday, SportSG said that the pitch remains one of the key deliverables that SportsHub Pte Ltd (SHPL) has yet to fulfil, in spite of promises and assurances given in the past to the government and the public.

The brickbats came fast and furious, first from Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri who blamed the National Stadium’s pitch for his decision not to field superstar forward Carlos Tevez for Saturday’s game against the Singapore Selection at the S$1.33 billion Sports Hub.
