YAACOB IBRAHIM: MALAY PIONEERS TO BE CELEBRATED IN PROGRAMMES

The Malay community can look forward to a series of programmes that celebrates the contributions of their pioneers, said Minister for Communications & Information Yaacob Ibrahim, who is also the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs. Following Singapore’s independence in 1965, many of these pioneers chose to remain and work with other communities to build the nation. Dr Yaacob said yesterday: “I have asked both MUIS and Mendaki, and working with other Malay-Muslim organisations, to think of programmes in which we can do two things. “One, to acknowledge their contributions, but more importantly, to tap on their experience, to bring about some kind of transfer between them and the younger generation.”

Former Old Guard Minister Chua Sian Chin dies

Former Cabinet Minister Chua Sian Chin, a member of Singapore’s first generation of leaders, died on Wednesday of heart failure. He was 81. Mr Chua had suffered from dementia since the late 1990s. First elected in 1968, he was immediately made health minister, making him the youngest Cabinet minister then at 34. He went on to spend 27 years in politics, and also held ministerial portfolios in Education and Home Affairs.

WHO SAYS WE’RE NOW BETTER OFF THAN PIONEER GENERATION?

I can attest to the fact that this is utter rubbish! I am 75 years old and I definitely qualify as one of the ‘ pioneer generation’. Let me enlighten you to what it was like when I started working. It was 1960 and it was nothing like what they have been telling you. IT WAS BETTER THAN WHAT IT IS NOW! Thank God we didn’t have Medisave, MediShield or MediFund. We could take care of ourselves, thank you. Yes, we could pay our hospital bills without any of these Medi jokes as medical care was REALLY affordable.
