NEW CITIZEN: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PA & GRC?

Last Saturday, I attended a Citizenship Ceremony at the Kaki Bukit Community Centreas a guest of one of my residents who had recently acquired Singapore citizenship. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was the Grassroots Adviser to the Kaki Bukit Grassroots Organisations (GRO) Mr Shamsul Kamar. The certificate presentation ceremony was separately graced by Mr Lee Hong Chuang BBM, Grassroots Adviser to the Hougang GROs and Dr Kee Wei Heong, also a Grassroots Adviser to the Kaki Bukit GROs. Mr Shamsul and Mr Lee were the losing election candidates for Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC under the People’s Action Party (PAP) ticket in the 2015 General Elections.

During the ceremony, one perceptive new citizen asked me, “what is the difference between the People’s Association and the GRC (Group Representative Constituency)?”

PEOPLE'S ASSOCIATION TO COURSE TRAINERS: IT'S ALL COMMUNITY SERVICE

I was told that it is all for community services. However, they (PA) charged residents for the courses and pay us about 50% (after taxes etc.,). I was unable to get jobs working outside as a trainer.

Our pay checks are always delayed 3 to 6 mths: as the people who sign our checks are always on vacation. I later found out that these people are sent overseas to build "Government base" overseas.

PA VOLUNTEERS AT MPS SCOLDED NEEDY RESIDENT INSTEAD OF HELPING THEM

The meet the people session has a large number of volunteers who would assist residents to write letters. The MP would only speak to people with highly difficult and urgent complex issues. When we spoke to the volunteers to assist us and when we told them the problems my grandaunt is facing. She had recently lost her job and needs some help with her utility bills. But they would be so sarcastic and say that there is limited resources and limited help, cant always accede to all your requests. Told us to fond solutions to our own problems where possible. My main complain is, when we ask them for help, they will turn around to lecture us and told us off saying we need to learn to be independent.

CORRECTION TO MSM NEWS: PA PANEL TO FIX LAPSES IS INCORRECT

There is a footnote at the end of the news report “PA sets up panel to fix lapses” (Jul 17), which said “Correction: An earlier version of this story and its headline said that the PA had set up a panel to fix lapses. This is incorrect. The panel is to review rules and procedures. We are sorry for the error.”

CCC CHAIRMAN APPROVES PA CLAIMS FROM OWN COMPANY, BUT PAP SAYS "NO DISHONESTY"?

I refer to the recent AGO report about the People's Association (PA) CCC Chairman from Admiralty, who approved PA claims from public taxpayers funds that went straight to his own companies. In the report, it says that the chairman of a CCC was involved in approving contracts worth a total of S$32,000, and corresponding payments to a company of which he was a member of the senior management. Test-checks revealed seven instances where the CCC chairman was involved in approving his own claims, totalling S$114,767 - a "clear conflict of roles", the AGO said. In three of these payments, no supporting documents were available.

PEOPLE'S ASSOCIATION DENIES HOGGING AUSTRALIAN BBQ TICKETS, SAYS TICKETS WERE FIRST COME FIRST SERVED

The People's Association (PA) has flat out denied hogging tickets to the "first come first served" mass barbeque event organized by the Australian High Commission. The BBQ took place simultaneously at 20 locations in Singapore in celebration of 50 years of good Singapore-Australia ties. In its statement, the PA said a total of 4,800 tickets were given out, and explained that the ticketing system was to control the crowds and assure ticket holders the chance to enjoy their food.
