TIME FOR GRASSROOTS VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE FROM THE HEART, NOT FOR GOODIES OR BENEFITS

Grassroot volunteers have long been blessed with benefits such as free parking and priority to Primary schools within the estate. All these unfair benefits should be removed so that the volunteers we attract for the community are helping out for the right reasons. It is high time to remove all these perks and accept only those who have the community at heart and wish to serve. This way it also helps the Peoples Association improve their image and shut those critics who accuse volunteers of helping out for ulterior motives.

PRITAM SINGH: THE PEOPLE'S ASSOCIATION IS A "FRONT" FOR PAP EVENTS

GRC-level Citizenship Ceremonies or GCCs provide a platform for the Government to organise the citizenship ceremony around politics, allowing ex-PAP candidates and PAP MPs to present citizenship certificates and NRICs to new voters, ostensibly to raise the PAP’s standing among new citizens. The People’s Association provides the front, as it does to all community-level PAP events, to legitimise the ceremony as a government-sanctioned event.

KEECHIU CHAN CLAIMS PEOPLE'S ASSOCIATION IS FAIR & NON-POLITICAL, OH REALLY?

I refer to the article “People’s Association is not partisan: Chan Chun Sing” (Channel NewsAsia, Apr 14). It states that “”The PA is a statutory board. It executes the directions for the Government of the day, as per any statutory board. The PA does not allow any political activity or canvassing on our premises or in our activities. And we certainly do not mobilise anyone for any political party,” Mr Chan reiterated. “If Ms Lim has any such evidence of wrongdoing, you can let me know, and I guarantee you I will follow up. I will be the last person to ever allow the PA to be politicised.””

PAP ACTIVISTS PLAN TO USE NON-PARTISAN GRASSROOTS RESOURCES TO TOPPLE WP IN ALJUNIED GRC

After GE2015, this PAP activist in Aljunied GRC, Suhami Hafidz, said that WP's only weakness is their grassroots support. He said that through the RCs (residents' committees managed by the so-called non-partisan Peoples' Association), PAP can get more programs for Aljunied residents, and get the residents to be more involved, thus getting them to understand the PAP's goals which are all about making Aljunied GRC a better place for residents to stay under PAP rule.

NO SEPARATION OF POWERS, S'PORE IS NOT A HEALTHY DEMOCRACY

There is no separation of powers in Singapore at all. The Executive has complete & absolute authority over. And even with such lack of separation of powers, the PAP govt has further entrenched its dominance through co-opting all grassroots organizations. This is not the framework for the creation of a healthy and sustainable democracy.

LIM SWEE SAY: GRASSROOTS LEADER APPROVED OWN CLAIMS & BROKE RULES OUT OF GOOD INTENTIONS

Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association (PA) Minister Lim Swee Say said that the PA broke financial regulations out of “good intentions” and “for the benefit of residents”, citing S$3.67 million worth of contracts which awarded contracts without a tender:

MAINSTREAM MEDIA'S DEAFENING SILENCE OVER LAPSES REPORTED BY AGO

When the AGO released reports of lapses by AHPETC, the result was immense. Newspapers and television news report this over and over 24/7. Inquiries were
held. WP members were questioned repeatedly. Court sessions were heard. And grants were held back too. Yet with the most recent AGO findings regarding government-related facilities, I couldn’t help but notice some difference with the treatment given, for lapses that were pretty similar.

SIZABLE MAJORITY OF THOSE AT FREE AUSSIE BBQ WERE GRASSROOTS MEMBERS

The People’s Association was engaged as the local community partner for the event. But only a select few community clubs had publicised the ticketing requirement prior to the event. A sizeable majority of the ticket-holders were decked in grassroots attire, though we understood that it was not an exclusive event. Many visitors were left disappointed and confused.
