Petition starter who wanted to make PE2017 an open election for all races has closed his petition with a heavy heart. He thanked Singaporeans for their support and wishes Madam President the best in unifying the nation.

Everyone is now visibly upset with the Presidential walkover but I am more upset with the passive nature of our malay candidates. Apart from Salleh Marican and Farid Khan who did not make the cut, there were high profile business persons who automatically qualified like Bank Of Singapore CEO Bahren Shaari and the CEO of PT Trans Retail Shafie Shamsuddin. Why did they not stand up and be counted for our Malay community and stop this farce of an election walkover?

Netizen Ismail Kassim thinks Mdm Halimah Yacob is an inspiring personality but not when she is a "PAP-sponsored" candidate. He acknowledged that all 3 candidates have achieved a lot but are only hurting themselves by taking part in the "flawed EP contest".

Would Halimah Yacob have qualified for PE2017 if the Government stuck to the Constitutional Commission's recommendation of having at least 6 years experience in a relevant office? Mdm Halimah had only held the office of the Speaker for about 4.5 years.

A netizen was skeptical of how many Malays are actually qualified to run for the upcoming Presidential Election, given that the criteria and scope is so stringent. He asked that the Government return to Nominating future Presidents instead.

On Friday (11 March 2016), former Presidential candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock declared his intentions to once again run for the Presidency in Singapore (PE2017). In PE2011, Dr Tan Cheng Bock narrowly lost to the PAP-backed candidate Dr Tony Tan by a razor thin margin of 0.34% vote share.
