WHY S’POREANS REFUSE TO WORK IN THE NURSING INDUSTRY

I have been observing the healthcare industry for many years and had worked in the industry for a long time. There is a perennial shortage of Singaporean nurses in our hospitals. The short fall is conveniently compensated by the recruitment of foreign trained nurses, who have huge problems communicating with the elderly patients in the hospitals. The question comes to mind as to why the healthcare institutions in Singapore are unable to attract locals to join the industry as nurses.

S’PORE NURSE: WE ARE SEVERELY OVERWORKED & OFTEN DON’T EVEN HAVE TIME FOR LUNCH

As what people always say, nursing is a rewarding career because nurses care for the ill no matter what race we are.... but what the public don't know is not all hospitals treat their staff well. Especially nursing staff. At least not in my ex dept of XXX hospital. Staff are usually overworked with tons of patients to assist everyday. Often the staff don't go for lunch which is 1 hour of break.

INDIAN MINISTER: OUR NURSES ARE HEADED TO WORK IN S’PORE SOON

The Economic Times reported that India and Singapore are on the verge of signing a “mutual recognition agreement” that will make it easier for Indian nurses to work in Singapore. Apparently (‘India-Singapore to sign a pact for movement of nurses‘), “India and Singapore are making progress in signing mutual recognition agreement for para-medical courses that will make it easier for domestically trained nurses to get work” in Singapore. “Our nurses are highly sought after… we have made some progress in Singapore and soon we should have some kind of movement of nurses (to Singapore),” Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry J S Deepak told Indian reporters.

Nurses can expect higher pay, more opportunities

MOH had set up the taskforce in 2012 to review and recommend ways to strengthen the development of the nursing profession. Over two years, taskforce has met with the Healthcare Service Employees’ Union and more than 2,000 nurses across 18 dialogue and townhall sessions to gather their feedback. More nursing home beds to cater for rising demand

FOR the first time, the Health Ministry (MOH) is planning to run its own nursing homes to help Singapore cope with the demands of a greying population. It is also looking into releasing land for new facilities and helping operators scale up more quickly, after revising its initial target of 15,600 beds by 2020 to 17,150 - a 10 per cent increase.
