SINGAPORE HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT CANCELLATION OF APPROVALS FOR SPEAKER CORNER EVENT

MARUAH is deeply concerned about the cancellation of approvals granted for the “Return our CPF” protest scheduled at Speakers’ Corner on 25th October 2014. When Speakers’ Corner was first established in 2000, it was specifically designated as the one protected area in Singapore where speakers could speak freely (with the usual restrictions on race, religion and national security) without having to apply for a permit under the Public Entertainments Act (and its successor the Public Entertainments and Meetings Act). The reforms of 2008 further promoted free speech and civil society development in Singapore and were welcomed by all.

NPARKS: LAST TIME MULTIPLE EVENTS AT HONG LIM PARK ALSO GOT NO PROBLEMS

The National Parks Board (NParks) has responded (29 Sep) to criticism that it should not have allowed 2 events to take place simultaneously at Hong Lim Park on Saturday (27 Sep). NParks said there have been multiple events – even those with clashing agendas – at Hong Lim Park previously with “no adverse or disorderly incidents”.

NPARK RANGERS TO TRAIN IN MARTIAL ARTS AFTER RISING NUMBER OF PUBLIC ASSAULTS ON THEM

The National Parks Board (NParks) is getting its rangers or enforcement officers to go for self-defence courses, in the wake of rising assault cases by members of public. The authority has put out a tender on the Government's procurement portal, GeBIZ, for vendors to run self-defence courses for rangers. There were eight cases of assault recorded so far this year, up from two for the whole of last year, and seven from 2012. The Commissioner of Parks and Recreation at NParks, Dr Leong Chee Chiew, said in some cases, the officers had to be hospitalised.

AGO Caught NParks Creating & Backdating Documents

In the case of National Parks Board (NParks), AGO was so annoyed at an NParks officer’s actions in creating and backdating documents to pass audit and MND’s attempt to be lenient towards the said errant officer that AGO literally rebuked MND. The case revolved around the development of Gardens by the Bay. This project was undertaken by NParks which is a statutory board under the purview of MND, Khaw’s ministry. During the audit of the project, AGO found out that certain documents furnished by NParks upon AGO’s request could have been created and backdated to give the impression that they existed at the time when the relevant transactions took place.

BUKIT TIMAH NATURE RESERVE TO BE CLOSED FOR 6 MONTHS

NParks will be repairing over half of the Reserve’s trails, and will also be stabilising its slopes and restoring its flora and fauna. A 1.3km-long raised boardwalk will also be built, and railings will be installed along critical areas of trails to ensure visitors do not stray off the trails.
