A middle-aged man refused to pay $24 restaurant service charge as he was unhappy that he had to walk to the cashier to pay for his meal. The man was dining with his family at a Thai restaurant at Nex. He complained that the waiter was slow and vented his anger when he could not pay from his seat. He eventually threw some cash at the counter, excluding the service charge which he thought was not worth paying for, before leaving the restaurant abruptly. The restaurant's manager has never met such an unreasonable customer before and felt bad for the cashier, who almost had to fork out the service charge on his behalf. It is uncertain if the restaurant will pursue the matter.

I refer to the article “Mothers are the pillars of our families, says PM Lee in Mother’s Day Facebook post” (Straits Times, May 14). It states that “”Mothers are the pillars of our families, with one of the toughest jobs of all. Nowadays they raise children, build careers, care for elderly parents, or even become the sole parent in a family. While their roles and responsibilities have evolved, mothers’ unconditional love and support remain strong and steadfast. “Let’s celebrate our mothers’ contributions as leaders, caregivers, providers, and role models. Take time today, and everyday, to show your mum how much she means to you”. Other ministers such as Ong Ye Kung, Josephine Teo and Lawrence Wong also posted Mother’s Day greetings on their Facebook pages.”

Mother's Day is supposed to be a day for celebration for mothers, but unfortunately, one would-be mother loss her life after an accident, and she would never have the chance to meet her daughter. Ms Goh Chieh Ting, who was pregnant with her daughter for six months, was crossing the road with her mother-in-law on Saturday morning when she was hit by a lorry turning out from a carpark. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, but her premature daughter was saved by doctors who performed emergency caesarean on her. The baby is reportedly healthy.
