PAP MP: BLAME THE MOTORCYCLISTS

"While we continue to implement initiatives to improve safety, it is even more important for all motorcyclists to take ownership of their own safety and that of their pillion riders," said Assoc Prof Faishal. He added: "We have all heard of cases where motorcyclists lose control of their vehicles, causing serious injury or death to themselves and their pillion riders. Such road tragedies can be prevented if riders remain vigilant and obey traffic rules when on the roads."

NEW SHUTTLE SERVICE 222P BRINGS RELIEF TO CHAI CHEE

COMMUTERS living at Chai Chee estate will get some relief during peak periods, after a new feeder route that complements an existing one was launched yesterday. Service 222P will run during the morning and evening peak periods on weekdays, to ease the crush and cut waiting times for those using 222. The "peak period short service" will ply a truncated route from Bedok MRT station through Chai Chee estate before heading back via New Upper Changi Road. This will provide residents with more buses to get to the MRT, and also benefit students from Ping Yi Secondary. Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said residents have highlighted the overcrowding and long waits for service 222 for some time.

[YOUR LETTERS] TRANSPORT AUTHORITIES FORCING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DISTRIBUTE FLYERS?

My son is a student in Ping Yi Secondary School. The school has asked my son and his friends to distribute flyers to the public at bus stops to raise awareness about the new feeder bus service 222 in Chai Chee. This is outrageous! Why do you need to use students to raise awareness of a profit driven organisation? Their exams are also around the corner. Why are the transport authorities so desperate now?

THE COE SYSTEM HAS BROKEN DOWN

I have observed how the disabled and elderly face difficulty in getting around with their family members, especially on rainy days when one can never get a taxi. We desire to be an inclusive society, but the ones who are truly dependent on private transport are often shut out. The roads have been prioritized for those who can drive big and flashy continental cars instead. Also, has the Government ever considered improving the fertility rate simply by giving priority of car ownership to parents with three or more children? If people want to aspire to the 5Cs, especially that of a car, let them achieve the 6th C of having more children first.

SMRT SHARES SOARED 20% AMID SPECULATIONS OF GOVERNMENT BUYOVER

LISTED public transport operator SMRT Corp's shares yesterday staged their biggest-ever one-day gain in recent memory, soaring almost 20 per cent, as investors speculated that a plan for SMRT to sell its rail assets to the Government was imminent. Shares of rival rail operator SBS Transit and its parent company ComfortDelGro also rose 7 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. Market watchers said punters may be assuming that SBS Transit will do likewise with operating assets of its North-East Line.

CCTV cameras fail to curb illegal parking

Mr Steven Ng, 33, said he was just parking for a "few minutes", and did not notice them. "I know it's illegal to stop even for a short while but I'm just here for a few minutes and it's troublesome to park in a carpark," said the construction firm employee. "I will try not to park here now that I know of the cameras." Sales manager Loh Koon Chuan, 50, who was parked at a passenger pick-up point in Bishan Road, felt the signs should be "bigger and more prominent".

COE prices mixed even as supply is set to rise

This was despite sluggish sales, and the prospect of an increase in COE supply from next month. "The market was quite weak," said Volkswagen Singapore's general manager of sales Daniel Chong, attributing the slow sales to price increases last month. "However, it was a three-week break between this tender and the last one." Tenders are usually two weeks apart, but longer gaps occur occasionally because the weeks in a month are not distributed evenly. Longer breaks usually result in more car orders, which in turn result in more aggressive bids.

My first virgin experience of SMRT breakdown

While I applaud the effort of SMRT staff in doing the best they can to help the commuters, there is still room for improvement for the S.O.P. in the event of a train disruption. So nearly an hour plus plus plus later, I finally headed to work, late, tired and frustrated. Here’s to our world-class transport which will be having a fare hike yet again. Well done SMRT and incumbent.
