The Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council said they were alerted to the incident at 5:55 am and immediately sent their horticulture team to ascertain the damage. It was reiterated that no one was injured, as there was no one in any of the vehicles. The Town Council reported that the tree is more than 30 years old, but the last inspection done this month had shown it was healthy.

Singapore Democratic Party's Chee Soon Juan has written to PM Lee to call for a By-Election for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in light of Mdm Halimah Yacob's resignation. He asked if PM Lee agrees with Mr Chan Chun Sing for previously saying that there will not be a By-Election. If he does not receive a response, he will "proceed to take the necessary steps to rectify the situation".

A netizen disagrees that a by-election can only be called when all GRC members leave a constituency. Having a by-election in this case will mostly help maintain consistency and fairness of the GRC system in having at least a minority run it.

SDP volunteer and Marsiling-Yew Tee resident Abdul Salim Harun is starting a petition to call for a By-Election in the GRC after Halimah Yacob stepped down from her position. He will be doing house visits and explaining to residents the importance of a By-Election.

Zaqy Mohamad will be the new adviser for the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC where Halimah Yacob had just stepped down from. He is also the adviser for Choa Chu Kang GRC Grassroots Organisation and will thus be serving residents from both sides concurrently.

Appointing a Grassroots Advisor in Marsiling instead of calling for a by-election raises very unsettling questions about how the Government recognises the legitimacy and authority of elected MPs. Does this mean that Government agencies will now accord them with as much recognition as elected MPs? Does this mean that these advisors can take on other roles that presumably only MPs can undertake?

Our reader who is a resident of Marsiling-Yew Tee finds it undemocratic for the ruling party to play around with the Constitution and have Mdm Halimah Yacob quit the party in order to run for the Presidential election. She said this is not what the residents have voted for and hopes opposition politicians can do something about this.

Today, I, and many other residents under Marsiling division, will become "orphans" as our MP, Halimah Yaacob, will be tendering her position as the MP and Speaker of Parliament to the Prime Minister, so that she can run in the Reserved Presidential Election.

SDP member Bryan Lim Boon Heng went on house visits in Marsiling and said the residents there are lukewarm about supporting Halimah Yacob for President. He also said they agreed there should be a by-election and believes the Government should not deny them their rights to call for one.
