In a Wikileaks media release on 15 September, a Singapore company is named as one of several which have allegedly purchased “weaponised German surveillance malware” for use. The products are apparently provided by FinFisher, which Wikileaks described as a “company that produces and sells computer intrusion systems, software exploits and remote monitoring systems that are capable of intercepting communications and data from OS X, Windows and Linux computers as well as Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices.”

Malware installed in users’ computers could have also allowed users’ keystrokes to be seen, according to Communications and Information Minister, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim. Speaking in parliament, Dr Yaacob said the hacking of SingPass could be because users had very simple passwords. He said there is no vulnerability in the SingPass system.

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) confirmed on Wednesday (June 11) that there are 2,000 users in Singapore affected by the Gameover Zeus (GOZ) and CryptoLocker malware, which have hit users internationally. A multi-national agency effort had earlier this month disrupted the GOZ botnet as well as the CryptoLocker malicious software.
