Four Malaysians convicted of disorderly behaviour outside Jalan Besar Stadium have been sentenced to a week’s jail. A fifth Malaysian arrested, Mohamed Kamil Kamal Basha, 28, disputed some points in the statement of facts and a pre-trial conference has been set for June 9. While a fine is more typical for these charges, the prosecution pushed for a short jail term, citing several aggravating factors.

A 27-year-old Malaysian woman was yesterday (Jan 20) arrested at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) for criminal trespass. “The subject had managed to leave the Checkpoint without being stopped, as the officers-in-charge did not immediately raise the alarm. By the time the alarm was raised two minutes later, efforts to locate the car in Woodlands Checkpoint were unsuccessful despite an immediate lock down of the arrival car zone,” said the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Police in a joint statement today.

Four Malaysian men were Monday (Jan 13) each sentenced between 34 and 36 months’ jail each for their involvement in contraband cigarettes. The four men were arrested last Saturday after 14,999 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth S$1.4 million were seized, marking this the third largest seizure of contraband cigarettes in four years. The duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded exceeded S$1.1 million. Last Friday, the Singapore Customs and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority conducted checks on a 12m container upon its arrival at the Tanjong Pagar scanning station. Checks revealed duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in 16 pallets of board partitions.
