FEWER FOREIGN STUDENTS TURNING TO SG FOR STUDIES, PRIVATE EDUCATION IN DECLINE

In 2012, there were 100,000 locals and 35,000 foreign students studying in private schools in Singapore. By 2015, the number has fallen to 77,000 locals and 29,000 foreigners. In 2016, Singapore saw the closure of 25 private schools due to fewer foreign students coming in to fill enrollment numbers. The Committee For Private Education (CPE) says a total of 42 schools were de-registered in 2015 and 2016 alone.

The Singapore government is encouraging employers to hire more locals and many MDs are indeed Singaporeans, but there’s also a good sprinkling of foreign talent among the upper legions, especially at DBS – widely seen as the most ‘international’ of the three home-grown banks. RESTRICT FOREIGN TALENTS & NON-GRADUATES WILL EARN HIGH PAY

Lastly, the Swiss and German vocational training model works not because of a simple difference in mindset, but because there exist highly paid vocational jobs in these economies. A vocationally trained Swiss plumber, for example, could earn more than a degree-trained junior doctor. Making this model work here will require a major re-alignment of Singapore’s economy, in restricting the supply of foreign labour for vocational jobs, which will drive up the wages of locals in these professions.
