OTHMAN WOK’S DEATH LEAVES ONLY 2 REMAINING MEMBERS OF SG FIRST CABINET

With the sad passing of former Minister Othman Wok, there are now only two surviving members of the Cabinet team that signed the Independence of Singapore Agreement in 1965. This, of course, is a very historical and important piece of document, that led Singapore to where we are today. The two are former ministers Ong Pang Boon and Jek Yeun Thong The Cabinet Ministers of yesteryear are men of great spirit and nationalism, doing their best to build Singapore to what we are today. The Ministers of today have a lot to learn from these men. Sadly, most of them are gone now. Now, not many people who know who the signatories of our independence are.

Protest against Philippines Independence Celebration on 8 June 11am at Civic Plaza Ngee Ann City

We are calling on Singaporeans to show your displeasure with the Philippines Independence Celebration on 8 June by participating in a silent protest outside Civic Plaza Ngee Ann City. There will be no violence but only dignified peaceful presence and we will wear black as a sign of protest. We also urge you to bring along your placards as a sign of protest against the publicised celebration.

Dialogue between organisers and protesters of Philippine Independence Day celebration best way forward

Last week, I felt concerned enough about Philippine Independence Day celebration saga that I wrote to the Philippine Embassy saying that I am sorry for the harassment the organisers have gotten, but that I also believe that there is some level of miscommunication and cross-talk between the organisers of the event and those that protest (at least some). I assured the Philippine embassy in Singapore that the protesters do not mean ill-will to the people of Philippines and that they appreciated the contributions of the Filipinos to our country. I expressed that the protesters' frustrations were more about the immigration and manpower policies in place.
