SG MAN FINED $72K FOR HIRING ILLEGAL WORKERS IN BAZAAR

A Singaporean man, Sao Wei Loon, 40, was fined $72,000 for hiring 19 foreign nationals without valid work permit passes. These illegal workers were hired as stall assistants at three pasar malams - located in Geylang Serai, Tampines and Toa Payoh, between 1 June and 16 September 2016.

MORE ILLEGAL WORKERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ARRESTED AT GEYLANG BAZAAR

MP for Marine Parade GRC, Dr Fatimah Lateef, said that in the wake of the arrests of illegal Indonesian workers at the Geylang Ramadan bazaar, there will likely be more arrests made. According to the MP, she would not be surprised if more people were caught for being illegal workers there, as she had seen many foreign workers frequenting the bazaar lately. She also reiterated that if these workers were found to be working illegally, they should be arrested immediately. She also said that the arrests of foreign workers working illegally in the Geylang Bazaar is not something new, as this had been going on in previous year's bazaar too. She also revealed that a special task force was set up a long time ago to check the status of foreign workers in the Geylang Bazaar.

SINGAPORE MAN CHARGED OVER HIRING OF ILLEGAL FT AT PASAR MALAM

In the wake of the recent arrests made at the Ramadan Bazaar in Geylang where illegal foreign workers were nabbed by the authorities, another Singaporean have been charged for hiring foreigners to work in night markets found all over Singapore. Sao Wei Loon, 40 years old, was charged in court over hiring 19 Indonesian nationals without valid work passes to work illegally as stall assistants at three pasar malam or night markets last year. The illegal workers were hired to work from anything from three days to more than three weeks, and the offences were committed between June and September 2016.
