HUMAN RIGHTS NGO: DROP ALL CHARGES AGAINST HAN HUI HUI & OTHER CPF PROTESTORS

The Singaporean government must immediately drop all charges against three peaceful protestors and guarantee the right to freedom of peaceful assembly in accordance with international human rights standards, FIDH said today. Activists Hui Hui Han, 24, and her supporters Mr. Koh Yew Beng (60) and Ms. Low Wai Choo (56) will appear before Singapore’s State Court on 24 February 2016 for the continuation of their trail, which was last adjourned on 16 October 2015.

SPARE KOVAN DOUBLE MURDER EX-COP ISKANDAR RAHMAT FROM THE DEATH PENALTY

I am disappointed with the death penalty ruling against disgraced policeman Iskandar Rahmat who was found guilty of murdering two men. The death penalty is not going to solve the problem, it is not going to bring back the dead but add to the body count. It is a primitive form of punishment that has no scientific evidence for deterrence. This is not the kind of solution we want for a democratic country that respects human rights. We are better than that. Iskandar Rahmat should be spared the gallows and spend the rest of his life reflecting on his actions in prison.

Human rights lawyer, Mr M Ravi, is a respected friend of the SDP. He has an accomplished legal mind and a heart of gold. His determination to do what is right has cost him much, both in personal terms and in his career. Unfortunately, he is also afflicted with bipolar disorder. But let us recognise this: Ravi's condition is a medical one. Let us also not defend or even praise Ravi's inappropriate behaviour when he is undergoing a manic episode and use him as a political football. Rather, let us treat him as we would treat a brother.
