HSA CONFIRMS FAULTY EPIPENS WAS DISTRIBUTED IN SG, BUT SINCE RECALLED

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has announced that a batch of potentially faulty EpiPens - which are used to treat severe allergic reactions - was distributed in Singapore but has since been recalled. The EpiPens came under the spotlight last week, when pharmaceutical giant Pfizer was accused of failing to investigate hundreds of complaints about defective EpiPens, including cases where patients had died.

FRONTLINE HSA BLOODBANK STAFF TESTS POSITIVE FOR ACTIVE TB

The Health Science Authority (HSA) has confirmed that one of its staff was diagnosed and tested positive for active tuberculosis (TB). What is more worrying, the staff in question was working at at the front desk of Bloodbank @ HSA and handles donor registration. So, the interaction of the staff with the public should be quite high.

BAANED DRUGS FOUND IN HERBAL WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS, HSA STOPS SALES

The Health Sciences Authorities had released a statement warning consumers to stop taking Anyang Herbal Blue and Anyang Herbal Red, which contain very high levels of banned substance sibutramin.

This particular banned substance has been known to cause heart palpitations, nausea, insomnia and hallucinations, amongst other things. HSA has already stopped the sale of the products, which are sold online and through direct selling by Jessie Cosmetics. The seller of the product is currently helping the authorities in the investigation.

HSA ADVISORY ON 2 PRODUCTS CONTAINING UNDECLARED POTENT INGREDIENTS

‘LONGRED Oyster-x’ is labelled to contain oyster powder to improve circulation and promote health. ‘LifeSparks 100% Natural PAIN RELIEF SUPPLEMENT’ purportedly contains a natural pain relief supplement blend to relieve gout, arthritis and aching joints. Both products were distributed by Paul Harrison International Pte Ltd, and were sold directly to consumers from their office in Ubi. Following HSA’s investigation and directive to the company, it has since stopped the sales of the products.

HSA PUBLIC ADVISORY AGAINST ‘HAI LENG HAI BEH HERBAL ITCH REMOVING CAPSULE'

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is alerting members of the public not to purchase or consume a health product labelled ‘Hai Leng Hai Beh Herbal Itch Removing Capsule’ (‘海龙海马止痒丸’), which caused rapid weight gain and round ‘moon face’ in a consumer; Cushing’s syndrome.

The product contains undeclared potent western medicinal ingredients. Dexamethasone is a potent steroid that is usually prescribed for inflammatory conditions and should only be used under strict medical supervision. Long-term unsupervised use of oral steroids can cause Cushing’s syndrome, increased blood glucose levels leading to diabetes, high blood pressure, cataracts, muscular and bone disorders, and an increased risk of infections.

HOMOSEXUAL MAN JAILED FOR DONATING HIV-TAINTED BLOOD

The 23-year-old had pleaded guilty to the offence at Bloodbank@Dhoby Ghaut, Health Sciences Authority, at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, on Dec 19, 2012. He cannot be named due to a gag order. Investigation showed that the defendant had declared that he had not "had sex with another male" when he in fact had been having a regular sexual relationship with a male partner since 2010. He also had sex with a male stranger sometime in December 2011 after a few drinks.

SINGAPORE CONTINGENT TO NEPAL RETURNS HOME

A total of 182 officers from various Singapore government agencies, who have been involved in the Republic’s relief operations in Nepal following last month’s earthquake, will be returning home in the coming days, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman said yesterday.
