BIG SUPERMARKET CHAINS SHOULD GIVE FRUITS TO CHILDREN FOR FREE

A great idea just hit me. Why don't our supermarkets, like NTUC, Cold Storage and Giant, organize free fruits for children like they do overseas? One of my observations in NZ is that they actually do have such a programme for the children there. Besides NZ, I believe many European countries too, carry out similar schemes.

Because of Singapore's hectic lifestyle, many of us neglect consuming fruits in our regular diets. Hopefully, by having this kind of programmes, it could raise awareness for young parents to inculcate a balanced diet for their children. This kind of good eating habits should definitely start from young. It also helps young families ease a bit of their economic constraints that they might be struggling financially to afford a nutritious diet for our precious future generations.

Surely, the big corporations can alleviate a bit of their costs to offer free fruits to children, so that they can enjoy the fruits, as well as develop a healthy habit of eating fruits?

ABANDONED TROLLEYS COST SUPERMARKETS $12000 TO REPAIR & REPLACE

Do you know that NTUC FairPrice loses about 1,000 trolleys every year in more than 90 of the stores that they operate in? Fairprice spends around $150,000 every year on repairing and recovering trolleys left in random places.

Another supermarket chain, Sheng Siong, loses 90 metal and 180 plastic trolleys each month. This means that $120,000 is loss on just trolleys.

Even the $1 dollar coin deposit for the trolley does not deter the upward trend of abandoned trolleys.

GIANT SUPERVISOR THINKS I'M TRYING TO CHEAT HIM WHEN I WANTED REFUND FOR SPOILT RICE

Bought a packet of Kangaroo calrose rice at the Giant outlet opposite of Redhill MRT. When I picked up the top pack, there was a whiff of rotten smell. The counter lady told me there has been a rotten smell since the morning and suspected that could be dead rats from outside the store. When I went for my cheng teng at the hawker centre, I thought my fingers smelt weird, like faeces. I checked the back of the rice packet and saw brown stains and on closer inspection, the rice in the packet looks mouldy. The supervisor checked the rice and asked me how many days since I bought the rice to which I produced the receipt and the counter lady also told him that I bought it 10 mins ago. He then told me that he will certainly refund me and made comments that how could the rice turn out this way and why did I even bring it for payment in the first place. He then asked me to follow him to rice aisle and brought up a few packets to show me that their rice are in okay condition to which I replied that it could be the only one and all I want is a refund.

GIANT SUPERMARKET USED UNDERHAND METHODS TO CLEAR EXPIRED SHRIMP DUMPLINGS?

I purchased New Moon brand whole shrimp dumpling at Giant supermarket located at Admiralty mrt station on 28/12/15 at around 5pm. 2 packets were stacked together with a yellow wrap-around sticker stating offer & only 1 packet's expiry date was visible with 16/01/16. As I was going to consume it the very day, it didn't bother me much. After reaching home, i opened the packets & to my surprise, the packet which was strapped at the back was way overdue a few months ago. It is disgusting that a big supermarket like Giant has resort to underhand methods to sell off products which are overdue with total disregard to consumer safety.

DISGUSTING HYGIENE CONDITIONS AT ANG MO KIO GIANT SUPERMARKET

I saw your story on how a rat at their premises was ignored by Giant supermarket staff at Yishun. I have encountered bad hygiene conditions such as centipedes, flies, bee, other insects found at the premises and spoilt food items being sold at Giant located at Ang Mo Kio and have been informing NEA on this matter for the past two years.
