VENDORS STRUGGLE AS GEYLANG BAZAAR RENTAL PRICES AS HIGH AS $17K

The idea that the stalls at the Geylang Bazaar are rented out for a mammoth sum of $17,000 for the month is just staggering! How to expect the stall vendors to be making money during the one month itself? It just seems that this is an exercise for the landlords to be making money renting out these stalls, while the vendors struggle to recoup any money at all. Many vendors in the Geylang Bazaar have voiced their concerns about the sustainability of the festive event, held in conjunction with the month of Ramadan. Some familiar faces at the bazaar in the past years have decided to sit out this year's event, afraid that they will be unable to recoup the rental prices. Some are even complaining that after almost half the month of Ramadan gone, their stalls have not even covered half of their rental fees.

MORE ILLEGALS CAUGHT WORKING IN GEYLANG RAMADAN BAZAAR

Another 9 illegal foreign workers were arrested at the Geylang Ramadan Bazaar yesterday in a joint operation by the NEA, MOM and the Police. The foreign workers were found to be working as food handlers. Just last month, more than 20 illegal foreign workers were arrested in the same bazaar in another operation by the authorities. For the past two years, MOM has launched a total of 76 such operations in bazaars all around Singapore, and have thus far arrested 257 illegal workers.

NEARLY HALF OF GEYLANG BAZAAR STALLS NOT HALAL CERTIFIED

The Geylang Ramadan Bazaar have been plagued by problems from the first day of its opening this year. Don't know why, but it seems like this is destined to be a year where the Ramadan bazaar will fail spectacularly. Already previous years vendors saying they don't make enough money. Amongst the problems and controversies surrounding the bazaar this year were when earlier this week, 22 unlicensed food handlers and illegal workers were nabbed in a joint raid by the Ministry of Manpower, National Environment Agency and Singapore Police Force. Then, there were the issue that many concerned customers had raised concerns on how many food stalls at the Geylang Bazaar were halal-certified. Based on what people are saying, it seems like nearly half the stalls at this year's bazaar were were not Muslim-owned and not halal-certified.

MORE ILLEGAL WORKERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ARRESTED AT GEYLANG BAZAAR

MP for Marine Parade GRC, Dr Fatimah Lateef, said that in the wake of the arrests of illegal Indonesian workers at the Geylang Ramadan bazaar, there will likely be more arrests made. According to the MP, she would not be surprised if more people were caught for being illegal workers there, as she had seen many foreign workers frequenting the bazaar lately. She also reiterated that if these workers were found to be working illegally, they should be arrested immediately. She also said that the arrests of foreign workers working illegally in the Geylang Bazaar is not something new, as this had been going on in previous year's bazaar too. She also revealed that a special task force was set up a long time ago to check the status of foreign workers in the Geylang Bazaar.
