In 2016, employment growth was 10,700 for locals and 5,700 for foreigners. In 2015, employment growth was 700 for locals and 31,600 for foreigners. About 35 per cent (estimated) of the total undergraduate and graduate student enrollment in our public universities are non-Singaporeans. Most of the foreign students are required to stay and work after their graduation for at least three years. Why do we allow practically anyone in the world to come as tourists – apply for jobs and stay when they find one? On the average – 30,000 new permanent residents (PRs) and new citizens have been granted per year. If it is still the average of 20,000 new citizens and 30,000 new PRs a year – does it mean that the estimated number of new citizens and new PRs granted from 2007 to 2016, may be about 194,000 and 409,000, respectively? As there were only 10,700 locals’ jobs’ growth last year – if the new PRs and new citizens granted last year was also about 30,000 and 20,000, respectively – how many of the 10,700 locals’ jobs went to Singaporeans?

So, the government should not cheapen the Singapore PR status. Make it hard to earn one, and when one does get a PR here, he would have really worked hard to earn it. Not by some cheap payment of PR fees, and these people are expected to really contribute to Singapore's economy. Only then are PR on a same level field as locals, and thus accusations of jobs taken from locals might be lessened.

I'm currently working at Tip Top Curry Puff, a subsidiary of Swensen's and would like the public to know of the deplorable working conditions that caused many of my colleagues to resign, which we suspect is a front for the foreign managers to hire their own kind after our departure as MOM does not really curtail the inflow of foreign workers on WP or S-Passes for big companies.

In an angry column piece at Quartz India, Indian journalist Ananya Bhattacharya has accused Singapore of being racist in its push to curtail employment passes to Indian "foreign talent". She has compared the "anti-immigrant climate" in the city state to Trump's America, and accuses local Singaporeans of perpetuating a climate of discrimination against Indians.

The government is deluding itself if it thinks MNCs here are creating jobs for locals. With the rise in our university educated population, the relatively small proportion of jobs for degree holders has become more intense, not less, because the jobs available for degree holders is still the same.

But what induced him to act in such a way? Apparently, he has negative perception about the influx of foreigners into Singapore, and the decline of the local population. See, authorities? Your brilliant masterplan on population growth have created unease and unhappiness amongst the local population, so much so that led to one man on a crusade to atack the foreigners. Nobody has any reason to incite violence against foreigners, but maybe, there is a deep resentment present in the number of foreigners in Singapore who are perceived to come here and take our jobs, and seem very well protected by the law when they commit crimes. Perception or otherwise, this is simply worrying.

I refer to the article “Review of India-S’pore economic pact not on hold: Delhi” (Straits Times, Apr 6). It states that “India’s Commerce Ministry says it is in discussion with Singapore on providing visas for its IT professionals but denies that the issue has led to the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (Ceca) being put on hold.
