PERPETUAL POOR LIVING CONDITIONS: NO SURPRISE ZIKA VICTIMS WERE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

Employers pay little attention to the hygiene, safety and cleanliness of workers’ living quarters on construction sites due to the transient nature of their stay there. It is also more convenient and cheaper to house them in these sites than to accommodate them in purpose built dormitories which provide better conditions. In the worst cases, they are made to live in buildings which are still under construction. Inadequate drainage results in pools of stagnant water forming whenever it rains, turning these work sites into breeding grounds for mosquitos. Cases of dengue outbreaks and Chikugunya have been reported before in the past and they usually occur in areas where migrant workers live. Therefore, the latest revelation that the majority of affected victims are migrant construction workers is not surprising.

JOBLESS: IS OUR SOCIETY ACCEPTING FOREIGN TALENT MORE THAN SPOREANS?

I have been jobless for 2 month, while going through advertisement over the web, i found a few posting that make me feel very disappointed. Why has our society accepting foreign talent more than pure Singaporean instead? Furthermore, i manage to see a few big agency such as "Achieve Group" & "MCI Career Services Pte Ltd" have a few posting with requirement asking for "SPM" qualification. What is our country turning into? There are also posting that state down "Chinese/Mandarin Speaking environment". We are a multi racial country, such requirements are very unfair to people who fall under the race of "Non Chinese". There is another posting stating down that a Jewellery shop is looking for a sales assistant in a ladies environment? Does it mean that as a male I'm unable to apply for this job? This posting show that there isn't much transparency and sensitivities in Singapore Employment Act.

This afternoon, I presented letters of commendation to two of our Tanjong Pagar Town Council cleaners, Nurul Islam and Sentu, for their honesty in reporting and returning $45,000 worth of jewellery to the rightful owner. Mr Sentu has worked in Singapore for 6 years and earns a monthly salary of $700 which he uses to support his family of 10 back home. Although there were gold, diamonds and other jewellery in the box, Mr Sentu and Nurul Islam were honest and returned the property to the rightful owner.
