“ONCE IN 50 YEARS” FLOOD HITS SG… FOR 5TH TIME IN 5 MONTHS
Flash floods struck parts of Singapore again today after heavy rain caused canals and drainage systems to overflow. The Public Utilities Board (PUB) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) issued warnings on social media accounts on Twitter to inform Singaporeans about expected heavy rainfall over the southern and western parts of Singapore from 1.35PM to 2.25PM today.

PUB released a statement stating that the stretch of Maxwell Road and the junction of Tanjong Pagar Road and Craig Road are known hot-spots for probability of flash flooding to occur, and added that drainage improvement works at the junction of Maxwell Road and Tanjong Pagar Road will start next month, and are slated to be completed by the third quarter this year. I may not be a smart enough person to get a lofty position at PUB, but if they already know the areas are hot-spots and very likely areas where flooding / ponding will occur, then why did it take the PUB this long to actually rectify it? They have to wait for the flash flood to actually occur before actually doing something? Is this PUB's way of telling Singaporeans they are working hard, and will rectify all the flooding problems, but in order to rectify, Singaporeans need to see for themselves first the areas really flooded?

This morning's non-stop heavy rain maybe caught everyone by surprise, as this is January already, and yet we are experiencing December type weather. The rain was so heavy, that some sort of flooding was expected to occur in Singapore. The surprise was that a flash flood occurred at the Tanjong Pagar area. So, flash floods did not occur at slums in Singapore, but instead, at Tanjong Pagar. How the rain gods is laughing at us now.

Yesterday, it rained heavily from 6pm to 8 pm. Due to the heavy rain, about 40 cars were trapped in the flood on Jalan Semantan at the entrance of Universiti Malaya. Traffic was affected on Jalan Semantan, Jalan Pantai Baru and Jalan Bangsar. Jalan Duta was cut off by the rising floodwaters.
