DARRYL DAVID: FOREIGNERS MUST SPEAK BASIC ENGLISH TO BECOME SG CITIZEN

During the parliament session yesterday, PAP MP Darryl David recommended that foreigners who want to become Singapore citizens must have a basic level of English proficiency and must serve a mandatory community service. He made these recommendations because he found that many new citizens could not express themselves or communicate with others because they cannot speak English. The MP said that by imposing such requirements, new citizens can better understand our local culture, integrate better with Singaporeans, and contribute to our society.

MALAYSIANS MORE PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH THAN S’POREANS, SAYS SURVEY

A survey by Swiss education company English First (EF) says that Malaysia has the highest English proficiency in Asia, even ahead of Singapore and South Korea who came in second and third respectively. According to EF's 2014 index, which surveyed 750,000 adults aged 18 and above, EF said Malaysia and Singapore were the only 2 Asian countries judged to have "a high proficiency" in English.

Went to a coffeeshop in Tuas, bought a can of coke zero an a bread ask the lady at the counter how much? And she replied in Chinese, so i told her in English pleased, but she keep repeating in Chinese… At that point a customer come forward and say it is $2.20 so i give her another $2 note. The Chinese lady accepted it but she still scolded me in Chinese. No one in Singapore speaks English properly, nor are they able to think in English properly, because English is the first language of not one of Singapore's three main ethnic groups. PRC ENGLISH TEACHER JAILED FOR TAKING LANGUAGE TEST ON BEHALF OF PRC STUDENT

An English language translator from China who sat for a language proficiency test here on behalf of someone else was sentenced to five months in jail on Thursday. Lina Zhang had been promised 7,000 yuan (S$1509) by a recruiter to pass the Dec 6 sitting of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination for someone named Ge Li. The 29-year-old presented a forged Chinese passport that bore her face and the other person's details to gain access to the test venue.
