TWO WOMEN FINED BY AVA FOR PET ABANDONMENT
The AVA has stated that those found abandoning their pets will be dealt with harshly. To reiterate their point, two women were fined and given a six-month ban from owning pets in separate cases of pet abandonment. Members of the public can report cases of pet abandonment to the AVA via its 24 hour hotline at 1800 476 1600.

Read in the news today that the Cat Welfare Society (CWS) president, Ms Thenuga Vijakumar, has made overturning the ban on cats in HDB flats as one of her long term goals. This ban on cats has been in place since HDB's inception in 1960. Some progress has been made - a pilot project for residents in Chong Pang to keep their feline companions in their flats was launched in 2012. Talks on funding to extend the scheme to two more precincts are ongoing. Once again, the debate between cats and dogs will be opened up. Most will ask why, if dogs are allowed in HDB cats, then cats are not allowed. After all, there are already thousands of cats living in HDB flats. Thus, by legitimising their ownership, this will allow for better education and enforcement against errant owners.

31 January 2017: In Nov 2016, the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) announced plans to enhance the pet dog licensing regime. The objective is to (a) improve the traceability of pet dogs in Singapore, especially in the event of a disease outbreak such as rabies, (b) discourage pet abandonment, and (c) help reunite lost dogs with their owners. The relevant regulations have been amended today, and the new licensing regime will take effect from 1 March 2017.

Our reader submitted a Facebook post by June Chan, a local teenager who came across a dog tied to a railing outside of a Seven Eleven store. The poor mongrel was left to drink rain water and eat rubbish off the floor outside the store. June felt pity for the dog and decided to buy a bottle of mineral water for the dog to drink even though she is afraid of dogs.

A reader sent this heartbreaking post to us about an abandoned golden retriever named Anchor who was left to die at BLK 334B, 13th Floor, Sengkang Anchorvale Crescent on the 9th of July. Facebook user Sg Dogslover is looking for any evidence to trace the Anchor's owner as this is a suspected animal abuse case. Anchor died on 24th June after struggling with illness and neglect. Sg Dogslover has also penned a goodbye note from Anchor, the abandoned dog, to his heartless owner:
