The Singapore 14th Parliament opened yesterday on 24 August with President Halimah Yacob delivering an address. However the focus of Parliament reopening was captivated by the Workers' Party MPs who turned up with their spouses. Many beautiful couples were seen confidently strutting themselves into Parliament. Who do you think stole the show?

The Workers' Party Members of Parliament (WP MPs) have restarted their physical Meet-the-People Sessions (MPS) last week. Physical MPS were previously suspended due to the Covid19 pandemic, but NEA has allowed MPS to commence once safety measures to reduce the risk of Covid19 transmission have been fulfilled.

The Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Pritam Singh announced on 25 June that political veterans Low Thia Khiang, Chen Show Mao and Png Eng Huat will not be contesting in GE2020. This decision to step down was made "some time ago". However their decision to step down does not mean they are retiring from politics. Pritam Singh shared that their collective decision to step down was based on three considerations to ensure the successful continuation of WP.

Workers' Party MP Denis Tan voiced his concerns over the chilling effect the POFMA Bill would have in Singapore, when speaking out in Parliament against the Fake News bill. He cited concerns over the lack of clarity over what would constitute “in the public interest” under the law as some of the definitions provided were too general or lacked a precise scope

Responding to Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Dennis Tan's questions on the National Arts Council's (NAC) withdrawal of funding for the book, "State of Emergency" by Jeremy Tiang, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu told parliament today that the book "did not meet the funding requirements mutually agreed upon as the content in the book deviated from the original proposal."

Kudos to NCMP Dennis Tan Lip Fong for suggesting to build a better footpath for Bedok residents! Earlier, he raised the issue in Parliament to Minister Ng Chee Meng to widen the footpath along Bedok North Avenue 4. He proposed the idea after seeing that there are many pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooters there and saw the need to make things convenient for residents. The improvement works, which have recently started, will include the area opposite St Anthony's Canossian Secondary School and Fengshan SMC. If completed, the footpath will be at least 2 times wider and will definitely add to a safer environment.

I had earlier wanted to wait for the authorities to report its findings on the Benjamin Lim case first. This is the case of the 14 year old boy who jumped to his death from his Yishun home after returning from a police interview following some allegation of outrage of modesty. Many people I spoke to recently have expressed great concern about this incident.

Dennis Tan of The Workers’ Party is continuing to work hard for residents even though he was not elected as an MP. This is unlike PAP MPs who were quick to leave their post once they were voted out and seek shelter under the coat tails of big-name Ministers. Will voters give Dennis a chance in GE2020?
