I am Singaporean Indian Muslim, but because my mother tongue is Malay, most Chinese friends would assume I'm Malay. I was asked by a classmate of mine (Chinese) whether I would defend Singapore if we were at War with Malaysia. She was genuinely asking and wanted me to answer. I was taken aback because my loyalty towards my nation was being questioned for the first time in my life. I would not call it deliberate racism on her part but because of the notion she has or was brought up with, it led her to question my loyalty.
