WHY THE UNEVEN PLAYING FIELD FOR RELIGIOUS LAND TENDER EXERCISE?

The Build-to-Order sale exercise was launched in 2013 while the tender for the land where the Chinese temple will be sited was held last year. It is interesting that the winning bid came from funeral services company Life Corporation, while the other two bidders were religious organisations. Commercial public-listed entities may have greater financial means to put in higher bids than religious groups. The authorities need to reconsider allowing commercially driven entities to participate in tender exercises for sites zoned for religious use.

First, it was a foreign workers' dormitory in Serangoon Gardens, then studio apartments in Toh Yi Drive and eldercare facilities in Woodlands and Bishan, and now it is a columbarium in Sengkang West ("Columbarium issue sparks calls for flat refunds"; yesterday). The not-in-my-backyard syndrome has resurfaced again, this time in the form of objections to "living near the dead".

RESIDENT: THE PAP GOVT IS INCONSIDERATE TO BUILD A COLUMBARIUM NEAR MY HOUSE

I am one of the residents affected by plans to build a columbarium in Sengkang. Despite the "dialogue" session with our useless MP Lam Pin Min, it is clear to me now that the plans will definitely go ahead and it will not be changed. The dialogue session was just to explain to us the rationale behind the plan and why it is reasonable to include columbarium services within the premise of a Chinese temple. This is a good reminder to me to VOTE THEM OUT in GE2016. No more PAP or more of such brainless plans will haunt me and my future.
