Will you let your children play if the playground is so dirty? A resident spotted this and complained to Tampines Town Council for its complacency in cleaning up the playground near her house. INDRANEE: MY RESIDENT KEEPS THROWING TEABAGS ONTO PALM TREE

After the Cleaner Appreciation event yesterday afternoon (see post below), I took a walk around the common space at blks 128, 129 and 130 Bukit Merah View and checked out the environment. Was dismayed to see this palm tree adorned with tea bags, obviously thrown from a higher floor and which had snagged on the leaves and branches. It was like a Christmas tree except that instead of pretty ornaments, this poor tree was festooned with used Dilmah tea bags!

VIVIAN BALAKRISHNAN: CLEANERS TO BE GIVEN ONE DAY OFF, RESIDENTS TO CLEAN UP OWN ESTATE

Cleaners with various town councils this year will be given a day off, with residents instead mobilised to clean up their own neighbourhoods, as part of fresh efforts to tackle the littering scourge. The standard of cleanliness in Singapore has fallen, with surveys showing that from 2006 to 2010, the number of litter items collected almost doubling, said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan in Parliament today (March 11).
