PAP MP LOUIS NG WORKS ONE DAY AS A TOWN COUNCIL CLEANER

As Chairman of the Town Council, it's important for me to understand what's happening on the ground, see where the gaps are and where we can improve. It is also important for me to understand the difficulties our cleaners face. And so the best way to understand is to experience it first-hand, which I did today. It was a physically exhausting experience but I also experienced something beautiful. I experienced how Hanif was clearly well-loved by the community and how he is so full of smiles. Residents smiled at him too, waved (from their houses, motorcycles, cars etc), shook hands, chatted, laughed, it was beautiful to see.

CLEANERS SALARY STILL STUCK $1,000 AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

As to “More than 26,500 resident cleaners are now paid at least S$1,000 a month – the entry-level pay under the Progressive Wage Model. The figure accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the resident cleaner workforce” – isn’t the Progressive Wage Model a failure in that only 69 per cent of local cleaners are getting at least $1,000 now? After so many years of implementing initiative after initiative to increase cleaners’ pay – and we are still talking about only $1,000?

MINISTERS MUST COME OUT OF THEIR IVORY TOWER & HELP LOW WAGE S’POREANS MORE

If there is an area that suffers from overcrowding in Singapore, it would be the ivory tower where most of our ministers will be seated comfortably in their immaculately pressed white sleeved shirt and pants, and shoes that shine so bright you can see your reflection. It does not take a genius to make a difference to poverty issues on the ground, and yet, many turn a blind eye to it. Why? One word: LAZY. If they actually have a heart, they would have gotten rid of the outsourcing and hired the cleaners directly and they would have done so a long, long time ago.

ROY NGERNG WORKS 2 WEEKS AS A TOILET CLEANER

My back was aching from the cleaning, but the clinic was going to open in another hour and I couldn’t stop to rest. Otherwise, I would be cleaning while the patients were walking in and it would be inconvenient to them. Unknown to most people, after I lost my job in the middle of June, I took up a cleaning job for about 2 weeks. A friend of mine had asked me if I knew anyone who could do some cleaning work for the clinic that he works at, as his cleaning lady was going on leave. I volunteered as I had just got out of a job, and I thought that it would be a useful experience to learn from.

NEA Deputy Chairman scolds S’poreans for poor upbringing

A pilot scheme to promote automatic tray return was started by NEA in November 2012 at 9 hawker centres which later expanded to include other hawker centres. The people in charge of the hawker centres in turn complained that more cleaners were actually needed after the launch of NEA’s initiative.
