Yes, freedom of speech is important, but I think may supporters of Amos Yee fail to think about this point: how much freedom of speech do you want? Something like Charlie Hebdo or the recent draw the prophet campaign in Texas, where two gunman were killed when they tried to attack officers guarding the campaign? Do we want our society to evolve into one where everyone has the permission to offend everyone else?

What is the impact of Charlie Hebdo in Singapore? My own sense is that with the majority of the population, there was shock at the terrorist murders, but not much discussion. Among the Singapore Muslim population, there was a great deal of discussion in the mosques and on social media, which is still ongoing. Singapore Muslims are angry at the utter disrespect for the religion of others demonstrated in Charlie Hebdo and the double standards of the West. They are quite disturbed that another cartoon was published again of the Prophet which was just as unacceptable.

Political will and a legal regime are required to tackle terrorism while social issues need to be dealt with so that no group becomes marginalised, Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said today (Jan 12) as he condemned the shootings in Paris last week which “can happen anywhere”. Masked gunmen shouting "Allahu akbar!" stormed the Paris offices of a satirical newspaper Wednesday, killing 12 people, including the paper's editor and a cartoonist, before escaping in a getaway car. It was France's deadliest terror attack in at least two decades.

11 people, two of them policemen, have been killed and 10 wounded in the shooting massacre at Paris headquarters of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Five of the wounded are in critical condition. Police so far confirm the death of one journalist, AP reports. Three officers have been wounded. "About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs. A few minutes later we heard lots of shots," a witness told local TV station iTele, adding that the men were then seen fleeing the building.
