94 CATS FOUND IN TWO ROOM HDB FLAT
Now imagine staying in a tight squeeze in the two room HDB flat and sharing it with 94 cats! AVA has reported over the weekend they are investigating a case of 94 cats being house in a two room HDB unit in Fernvale Link. Most of the cats are found in less than satisfactory conditions, with some suffering from eye infections and some bruises, confirmed the Cat Welfare Society (CWS), which had rescued the cats togethter with some volunteers. The HDB unit itself were found to have mouldy ceilings, and videos showed the house only had a bed, two stools, and some plastic bags that were stacked against the wall in the living room of the flat. AVA said they had been informed of the incident, and are currently investigating. The rescue operations of the cat took 4 hours in total, and 17 of the cats were sent to Mount Pleasant Pet Clinic for further treatments. According to reports, the person who looked after the cat is now unable to provide for the cats anymore.

AVA has acknowledged that they hired contractors to remove cats, but only those who reportedly enters residents homes. This recent issue came to light when a Cat Welfare Society (CWS) mediator said that he had approached a man seen with a net and carrier to catch a cat that allegedly went into a residents house. The man siad he had been engaged by the AVA to remove the cat, and to bring the cat to AVA, or he would not be paid for the job. However, the cat was not found in the resident's house, and the mediator expressed his misgivings that the man, and any other cat catchers, would just take any cats in the neighbourhood and deliver it to AVA to receive his pay. This raises the question of the safety of the cats. AVA clarified that they will close the loop by checking with the person who provided the feedback to check if the contractor was present, and if the correct animal was removed. They also reiterated that all cats caught will be taken care of by their officers daily at the AVA pound, and if those cats are found to pets, they will try to reunite the cats with their owners.

Read in the news today that the Cat Welfare Society (CWS) president, Ms Thenuga Vijakumar, has made overturning the ban on cats in HDB flats as one of her long term goals. This ban on cats has been in place since HDB's inception in 1960. Some progress has been made - a pilot project for residents in Chong Pang to keep their feline companions in their flats was launched in 2012. Talks on funding to extend the scheme to two more precincts are ongoing. Once again, the debate between cats and dogs will be opened up. Most will ask why, if dogs are allowed in HDB cats, then cats are not allowed. After all, there are already thousands of cats living in HDB flats. Thus, by legitimising their ownership, this will allow for better education and enforcement against errant owners.
