CATHOLIC CHURCH: GOVT SHD CLOSELY MONITOR GAMBLING SITUATION

In any form of state or public policy, the Church stands not only for the protection of every person’s individual rights but also the promotion of the good of all in society. The effects of excessive gambling go beyond affecting just an individual, especially if the gambler is a bread winner.

CATHOLIC CHURCH: AMOS WAS NOT “EXCOMMUNICATED”

On Tuesday, a spokesperson from the Archdiocesan Communications Office, responded to TODAY’s queries, saying Amos’ “decision to leave the Church was totally of his own accord”. The spokesperson added: “The Church respects his freedom to leave the faith. Nevertheless, the doors of the Church continue to remain open to him, and we pray that God will enlighten him in the truth.”

THE ELOQUENT BOY WHO BROKE OUR HEARTS

As a Singaporean who voted for SDP during GE2011, I am now regretting my decision to support them in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC. I thought I was voting for a credible and competent voice in Dr. Vincent Wijeysingha but I have been sorely disappointed. During the elections, Dr. Vincent came acrossed as a learned, measured and capable man, a man who could connect with Singaporeans, a man whom we could trust. But events surrounding Dr. Vincent after his SDP departure made me lose my respect for the man I once believe in.

VINCENT WIJEYSINGHA: WHY CATHOLIC CHURCH SO SERIOUS?

I must disagree with you that the Professional Standards Office takes such matters seriously. One of the principal ways the Catholic church abuses the trust of children is by the homophobia it propagates. Archbishop Goh’s three Pastoral Letters on the subject of homosexuality in February, June, and July confirm the church’s destructive attitude. Had the Catholic church truly intended to propagate a message of love and compassion, the Archbishop would have restrained himself from associating the church with the hateful propaganda publicised by Laurence Khong and Noor Derros in response to Pink Dot. Rather, he made common cause with them. I am sorry to have to say, therefore, I have no confidence in church agencies.

YAHOO NEWS USED UNDERHANDED & UNSCRUPULOUS TACTICS TO ATTACK THE CHURCH

Leave it to the secular mass media to employ all manner of underhanded, unscrupulous tactics to try to drag even what is holy and good through the mud. Yahoo News has seized upon just one standalone line in the pastoral letter to create a sensationalist headline, which as we speak has already been celebrated by those seeking to attack the Church at every opportunity as 'evidence' of the Church's supposed admission of error in its teachings on this subject.

VINCENT WIJEYSINGHA IS A LIAR

Whatever reservations or sympathy I had on him being a victim of the hideous crime of molest was quickly evaporated when I read the note. I can only describe it as a vile, contemptuous diatribe filled with so much bile, half-truths, unsubstantiated allegations and vicious self opinion designed to damage the Catholic Church here, and to cast improper and unwarranted aspersions against the Church and the Catholic faith as a whole.

Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, I Think You Got It Wrong

For someone who prides himself as a social worker, an advocate of rights and transparency, Vincent comes across as being irresponsible and unfair when he attacks the Catholic Church via an unsubstantiated allegation. If he was indeed sexually harassed, he should name the priest involve, bring it to the attention of the Catholic Church, or the authorities, and not name-shame the Church just because he does not agree with what the Archbishop has said about the LGBT community.

VINCENT WIJEYSINGHA: I WAS MOLESTED BY A CATHOLIC PRIEST WHEN I WAS 15

When I was fifteen, I came into unfortunate contact with a priest who would engage me in play wrestling and attempt to touch my crotch in the process. He once brought me to his bedroom and took a stack of pornographic magazines from his wardrobe to show me. I was fifteen. I haven't till now disclosed this sorry incident publicly. It never seemed momentous and so far as I’m aware, it didn’t damage me. But Archbishop William Goh’s pronouncements this weekend prompted me to. The Catholic church long ago surrendered its right to participate in the moral debate and Goh’s statement must be put in this proper context.

Catholic Church may set up support groups for those “struggling with same sex attraction”

The Catholic Archbishop William Goh has reassured believers of the Church's position that family - comprising heterosexual couples with children - remains the "indispensable, basic building block of society". But he is also exploring the setting up of support groups for those "struggling with same sex attraction", which would also help their loved ones who have difficulty accepting them. In a statement on Monday, the Archbishop explained that the Church's non-public engagement of opposing groups on the issue of the Health Promotion Board's (HPB) controversial Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on sexuality is by no means evidence of its "flight" from its "Christian calling to speak the truth and defend the cause of the family", he said.
