IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOVT TO VET ALL READING MATERIALS

So the government admitted that it is not possible for the authorities to go through ad vet every reading material they purchase before making them available for loan at the Libraries. This come in the wake of the concerns over copies of the Malay-language series - Agama, Tamadun Dan Arkeologi (Religion, Civilisation And Archaeology) - which were available in libraries since 2013, and placed in the junior non-fiction section. The series of books apparently depicted Jews in a negative light and seemed to legitimize the use of violence in the name of Islam. But Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim said that the authorities will learn from this episode, The books have since been removed, and Min Yaacob also stated that the NLB had done their due diligence and its very best in this episode. The nature of the books only came to light this year after a twiter user shard photos of them over the weekend.

EX-GOVERNMENT SCHOLAR: I CAN NO LONGER DEFEND THE PAP GOVERNMENT

For most of my life and career, I have defended the government and the civil service. Even today, I will defend some of my friends within the NLB, whom I know did not agree with the final decision, but had no choice but to comply with the line taken by senior management. But this, I have found, is truly indefensible. This government I have defended, even when I did not agree with its policies and actions, has crossed a red line. It has lost my vote today, but worst of all, I think it has lost my faith.

SINGLE MOTHER: NLB BOOK CENSORSHIP LEADS TO INTOLERANCE & BIGOTRY

My daughter and I have a very close relationship. Even though there are only two of us, we are bonded in love and kinship and we are a real family. Together with many friends I know who are single parents, adopted parents, blended-family parents, homosexual men and women, we are real, and we live alongside other Singaporeans from traditional men-woman union, making the same contribution to our country. By removing books not conforming to the prescribed family model, I fear that we are creating an artifical reality for our young children. I fear that my daughter is denied the opportunity to learn the diversity of families and that she will grow to doubt her value as an individual.
